Introduction to Railroad Control Points


Control points are important parts of railroad signaling systems. They provide a location where switches, signals, track circuits, and other interlocking functions can be controlled and monitored.

A control point helps manage train movements through complex track layouts such as junctions, crossovers, terminals, sidings, and interlockings. Its purpose is to support safe and efficient train movement.

A control point may include equipment such as control panels, signal equipment, switch machines, track circuits, communication devices, power supplies, relays, cables, and control logic.

The primary function of a control point is to allow authorized train routes to be established and monitored. Operators or dispatchers can line routes, monitor signal indications, verify switch positions, and observe track occupancy.

Older control points may use physical switches, levers, buttons, relays, and indication lights. Modern control points often use computer-based control systems with graphical displays, event logs, diagnostics, and remote monitoring.

These systems help operators and maintainers quickly understand the condition of the railroad and respond to problems. Control points are therefore both safety devices and operational control locations.
